Spotlight on Soofie Bhaijaan (45th Cutting) Masjid

Soofie Bhaijaan Masjid, 45th Cutting, Sherwood, Durban. Photo: Ahmed ChothiaIn 1905 a piece of ground, adjacent to the main road (Jan Smuts Highway)  to Pietermaritzburg, was purchased by Hadrat Soofie Saheb (RA) and placed into a Trust. The area was known as Rooikopjies. Initially a foundation was laid for a Masjid, but perhaps he foresaw the road widening that was to affect the site in time to come and he built a wood and iron Jamat Khana on the western side of the land, which was also used as a Madressah. A residence was built for the Imam and the Mu’adhin. The Northern end of this land was used as a cemetery, which is still in existence. This institution thus catered for the needs of the Muslims of the 45th Cutting and part of Mayville and Sydenham areas in Durban.

Ladysmith Masjid (Mosque)The lasting tribute to Muslim architectural marvel in South Africa lies midway between Johannesburg and Durban. Situated in the Natal Midlands, with the dramatic Drakensberg mountain range alongside, the Ladysmith Soofie Masjid must have been a welcome relief for wary travellers casting their eyes on this splendid structure.

Masjid al Nabawi, Madinah, Saudi ArabiaToday (Saturday, 27 February) marks the birth and death anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the final Messenger of Islam.

Muhammad (pbuh) was born on Monday, 12 Rabi al-Awwal in the Year of the Elephant, in Makkah, Arabia. The Christian date of his birth is 20 April 571 AC. (Note: Muslims follow the lunar calendar, which began with the Hijrah or migration of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) from Makkah to Madinah.)

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was indeed one of the most honourable men to have ever walked the earth. His qualities of humility, integrity, justice and non-discrimination, serve as a guide for us in our everyday lives. His nature was such that he led by example.

If I were to post a tribute to this great personality on my social networking forum, this is what I’d say:
