Shaykh Ahmed Hoosen DeedatAhmed Hoosen Deedat was born on 1 July 1918 in Tadkeshwar, a village in the district of Surat in India. In 1927, at the age of nine years old, as the only son, he accompanied his father Hoosen Deedat, to South Africa. His mother, Fathima, the daughter of Hafiz Hoosen Norgat, and his sister Rassool remained in their hometown in India. Both father and son settled in Durban in South Africa. Ahmed’s father began working for several Muslim business-houses in and around Durban. Within a few years, however, he managed to establish his own tailor-shop in Madrasah Arcade (off Grey Street) in Durban.

As a little boy, Rajah would build gadgets and gizmos that could listen to people’s conversations from a distance; toy cars that drove themselves; radios and speaker systems - even a device that gave unsuspecting inquisitors an electric shock!
